Surf Sports

Surf Sports has a number of disciplines:

  • swimming
  • board and ski paddling
  • sprints and beach flags
  • IRB (inflatable rescue boats) racing
  • surf boats

These events offers our lifeguards a chance to hone their skills and become fitter, faster and stronger in a fun, social and competitive environment

Fitzroy Surf Club has a strong training program over all of these disciplines.  Please see the calendar for details of training schedules. Coach contact details can be found here.

Swimming – Eagle McCallum
Swim training is focussed around morning pool sessions.

Board and Ski – Ron Cole
Our board paddling program has three groups:

Bronze Whalers – for our newer paddlers
Silver Surfers – our intermediate group
Gold Coasters – our elite group

Ski Paddlers are out regularly during the week.

Sprints – Allan Riddick
Allan runs training for beach sprints and flags.  There isn’t too much training for the 2km beach runs…

IRB  – Todd Velvin
IRBs are one of the main rescue devices used by our lifeguards, they are fast, manoeuvrable and can get out to a person in trouble in the surf quickly. IRB competitions run separately to the main surf sports competitions. The BP Surf Rescue Championships was created to give increased opportunity for clubs to race against the best crews within Surf Lifesaving.

Surf Boat – Eagle McCallum
We have surf boat and a group of talented boaties who train and race. We are always looking for more keen people to row the boat so get in contact with us if interested.
