Training and Competition

Children need to be at the Fitzroy Club rooms before 9.45am, ready to go with pink vest, togs/ wetsuit, towel and warm change of clothes. Children are divided into their groups and told of the days activities.

Please put all of your gear in the changing rooms before the start of the day. You won’t be allowed back in the clubrooms all sandy and wet. Showers are available for parent and children.

Every child MUST sign in and out each day. This is to keep track of numbers of children and to keep them safe.

During a carnival children will compete against other local clubs in a range of events which they train for during club training days. See age groups for further information. During the season each club will host a carnival. We need lots of help with the setup and running of these carnivals and your support in this is greatly appreciated.

Our club gets points for every Nipper, Rookie and Cadet who competes and has placings.  It’s about learning and giving it a go. Early season, the weather and water can be cold, and we encourage parents of Nip Nips to only come along if conditions won’t put the child off.

See Club Uniform for further information about what to wear on the day. Rookies and Cadets are expected to help load/unload the gear before and after carnivals. Older children can travel to carnivals in the club van. They normally run for 3 to 4 hours and there is usually a sausage sizzle afterwards.

At the end of season, the main competition event is the Taranaki Junior Champs. Rookies and Cadets must have the 200m badge sewn onto competition cap or togs to compete in surf races.

Carnival dates can be found in our calendar.

Pool champs are an annual event normally held in Hamilton. These are aimed at Rookies and Cadets age groups. These last for 2-3 days and involve an exciting range of individual and team events.

This is an annual National competition for Rookies and Cadets held in Mt Maunganui. All events follow the carnival procedures but with a higher degree of competition, and competitors from all over NZ competing. This is a fantastic event and highly recommended. We compete as a team and stay as a team. We even have a skit night to keep the laughter rolling.

Details of these will be advised closer to the time.

As well as club day training (Sundays), Rookies and Cadets are able to participate in weekday training as well. Training normally consists of Board and Sprint sessions.

Times will be posted on our web page, emails and facebook.
